I've been doing some form of SaaS content writing service for over 11 years. And in that time, I've helped SaaS companies generate over $80 million in revenue from content.
That includes being the second marketing hire for a bootstrapped SaaS, advising dozens of companies on their SEO and content, and with my team here at Content Guppy.
Content writing has changed a lot since I started back in 2015.
When I first started, here's how writing content would work.
Step 1: Keyword research - we would find high traffic, low competition, and high buyer intent keywords.
Step 2: Content Brief - create an outline so that the writer knows what topics we would like to cover.
Step 3: Find a writer for about 10 cents a word to create a 2000 - 2500 word blog post.
Step 4: Publish.
And that was more or less the entire process.
In 2026, however, that process is just not good enough. Competition is too fierce. AI Overviews and PPC have dramatically altered the SERPs.
And, what I think is most important: buyers have become much more sophisticated.
There was a time that the most sophisticated buyers didn't trust Google. Because they all knew the content on the first page was designed specifically to rank... not to provide any actual new information.
This is starting to change how content is written... or should be written. Thankfully!
Factors to Consider when Hiring a SaaS Content Writing Service
Factor 1: Do your goals align?
Some content writing services will tell you that the number one goal is more traffic. But in our opinion, the only thing that matters is revenue.
Whether you're writing a blog post, creating a weekly newsletter, or publishing a service page, we only care if the content is increasing MRR.
It's our contention that the only thing that matters for a content writing service is increasing revenue.
You can create a newsletter to nurture clients.
You can write a blog post that gets traffic.
You can write content to get more domain authority.
But all of these activities should exist within the scope of increasing revenue.
Factor 2: Does the agency help you create entity authority?
Does your agency actually create content that adds new insights or information to the ecosystem? Or do they just regurgitate what's already ranking?
Is the agency helping you create a point of view that will make sure that your content stands out in a sea of sameness?
Or are they using AI tools to simply create crappy content even cheaper and faster?
SaaS companies have to try to grab the attention of some of the most sophisticated and educated buyers in the market.
If you're trying to appeal to the CMO of 500 person company, then regurgitated content isn't going to grab or hold their attention.
Factor 3: Is there a strategy for AEO?
Does the agency have a way to increase recommendations in various LLMs? Are they working to help get you on the short list of tools that AI recommends when an ideal client prompts your service?
Does the agency have a strategy for helping you increase your brand exposure? Is there a strategy in place for helping you distribute your content and your point of view so that LLMs know to recommend you to your ideal buyers?
Factor 4: Do they have a history of generating revenue content?
What's their primary KPI? Are they selling you on rankings, traffic or revenue?
Obviously, rankings and traffic without revenue is pretty much useless.
I believe that one of the greatest advantages that we have at Content Guppy is that I came from a SaaS company where I had to build revenue with SEO.
We didn't have the time and money to invest in traffic generating activities.
Early on, we weren't investing in glossary pages, or these big top of funnel pieces of content.
Every piece of content that we wrote needed to have the potential to generate revenue.
I've carried that philosophy while building Content Guppy.
1. Content Guppy
We've spent the past 11 years building, adjusting, and modifying a content writing service designed to help SaaS companies increase MRR.
Like I mentioned, the way we created content back in 2015 won't work for 2026.
Here's how we've adjusted our content writing system to address the factors that we've discussed above.
1. Identify Content Based on Increasing Revenue
We created a scoring system that will allow us to predict the impact that a particular piece of content is going to have on your SaaS.
We take into account two key metrics.
Is your target audience looking for this type of keyword?
This goes a bit beyond search volume. We want to know if the people who would be interested in buying your product are actually looking for the type of content that we're trying to create?
For example, a CRO of a 500 person SaaS isn't going to Google "What is a CRM". Even though this keyword has thousands of searches per month - it's practically useless for a CRM company.
Does the keyword have buyer intent?
Instead of the keyword "what is a CRM", what might be more interesting to a CRO ready to switch platforms is "What's the difference between Hubspot and (insert company name here)."
The CRO already knows what a CRM is. Now they're just looking for something that fits their exact needs.
And if your CRM meets their qualifications, then there's a great chance you'll be on the shortlist of demos.
2. Create Content That Builds Entity Authority
Like I stated before. We used to simply create content that was regurgitated research. We added nothing new to the ecosystem.
And sadly, most agencies still do this today. They'll throw a brief into AI, or give it to some cheap writer and call it a day.
Instead, all of our content begins with an interview process.
We want to interview SME's within your organization to get your point of view. What do you believe? Why does your company exist? How do you want your customers to view you in comparison to your competitors?
We also interview your customers and sales team. This is where the "real" data comes. Straight from the trenches.
Why did your customer hire your SaaS?
What features are most important?
What integrations are the most used?
Why did they switch from what they were doing?
These are just a few of the questions we ask to build a customer profile for your SaaS to draw from when we create content.
3. AEO isn't a Bolt On
We aren't just an SEO agency who then bolted on AEO services when it became the thing to do.
We had to rebuild our entire process from the ground up.
From how we create content (our interview process) to how we promote content.
Before, we used to build links. Rank the content. And be done.
But now, we get you on podcasts and YouTube channels so you can share your POV. We write guest posts promoting your SaaS. And we get you brand mentions on high authority sites.
This is how you can dominate in the SERPs and get your SaaS shortlisted in LLM recommendations.
4. Revenue is all that matters
How we hold ourselves accountable is by creating content that converts traffic into trials and demos.
You'll see content like this, this, and this on your site and know that it's producing revenue... not just increasing traffic.
